And EV Nova, and Oblivion...
Published on June 11, 2008 By erathoniel In Gaming

Now, I'm in the Mythos beta, and this is all I will say about it: It's awesome. It's like the Korean grindfest games, but it doesn't get boring as quickly and has a lot of content. Also, it's got a major drive to level up. I'll be playing it a lot.

However, I find that I've been spending a lot of my time on games, and not much doing everything else. For instance, I did maybe 8 hours of work in a day, I spent 8 playing Mythos or EV Nova (bought it yesterday), mixed with Oblivion. The problem is that these games are so darn addictive (I'll write a review of each later), and I'm so darn weak to their addiction. Anyways, onto the reviews

    Game Review: Mythos

It's still in beta, so I'll disclose as little as possible. It's awesome. I play as a Sylvan Gadgeteer (I do believe that you can look it up outside of beta). Basically, I use guns. Lots of guns. Rifles and dual pistols (or single pistol with other weapon/shield, but that's not as fun). It's got great graphics, decent system requirements, and, better yet, it's free. It's a lot like FATE or Diablo. Hack-and-slash at a basic, simple level with lots of goodies. I give it six @'s.

    Game Review: EV Nova

EV Nova is a really old game (look it up, it's got a 30 day demo) that is awesome. It has good graphics (albeit 2D), simple action gameplay, and a good background with storylines and whatnot. I love it. It's kinda like Stellar Frontier where you control one ship (I have five right now, actually, two Pirate Enterprises, a Pirate Viper, and a Manticore, and the hacked Pirate Viper I use) or a small fleet in fast-paced space combat. I give it six @'s. It costs thirty dollars, and is safe for children (to an extent, maybe PG/PG-13 for storyline).

    Double Take Game Review: Oblivion

I've reviewed Oblivion before, but I'm gonna again. Oblivion is one of the best fantasy RPG's you can find. It's very good, no matter which platform (it has full mod support for PC, though) you play it on. It, however, has a couple gaping flaws. For instance, the darn lack of true dark. I never use a torch, nor night vision. Still, you get a wide array of interesting magic effects to use (Absorb Health+Soultrap being useful), and a very good experience. Be forewarned however that it plays a lot like an action game, less like a RPG. Still, it does have enough leveling and bonuses that it pays to go through the RPG procedure.

I have been waiting for Mythos to go into open beta. It seems as though 2 months ago, they were saying it was very close to open beta....the game looks great, though.

It is great. I recommend it for everyone. Don't buy FATE while you wait, though, because it's very similar in style (albeit better).

what is Mythos and what is EV Nova???

@erathoniel

it would be nice if you provide links to background into to some of these games you review. A lot of times, i have no clue what you are talking about. Not that i am lazy or anything, but a lot of times, sometimes when i see you review games, you don't provide any background to some of the games you mention, what i mean is like the world background these games are based on. Is it an RPG, first person shooter, what are the stories, characters etc. Is the game good sole for gameplay purpose or does it provide a great story while lacking in good game play mechanics.

Mythos is a Massive Multiplayer Hack and Slack Diablo-like clone. It's pretty good for a Hack-and-Slash, I've been in the beta for about a year now. There was a bot in their IRC channel who would give invitations to their beta.

As for Oblivion, it's my favorite single player game of all time. GC is my second

I'm sorry, but when I'm doing three at a time I get a little lazy/forgetful. If you ask me for a link for Oblivion, I am likely to destroy something expensive.

Ah, nice little write-up on EV Nova. It's published by Ambrosia Software, and was easily the greatest shareware series on the Mac. When I made the jump to PC, there were two programs I missed the most over in the Mac side, BBEdit, and Escape Velocity (EV). It is a great series powered by a decent, branching story line and user add-ons.

Think 2D SoSE w/o the MP and with a storyline. Great gem.

How long did it take you to get into the mythos beta, because I signed up a while back and i haven't got in yet? (sorry if this is a bit of topic)

It took maybe a month about a year ago.

I got in in about an hour by visiting their IRC channel. There was also an unofficial forum where they were handing out invites. They probably still do it on IRC.

I'm pretty sure I have some invites on my account that I can send you, if you want.

How do you see if you have invites? Does it pop up anything in game or out of game?
