The game that could have been
Published on July 29, 2008 By erathoniel In PC Gaming

Space Siege is the sucessor to Dungeon Siege, a wonderful game. But does it live up to it's predecessor's glory? Nope. Not at all. It reminds me of one of those arcade-style games that have the 60-minute demo that nobody buys because they're tired of it before they get through it, with more lag. Seriously, on minimum settings, I got about 3 FPS on my laptop. I might contemplate it on GameTap, or if I had a better computer, but it falls in the middle ground of casual and complex. It's probably too complex for a casual gamer to enjoy, and too casual to play with the memory of Dungeon Siege still fresh. I skipped DS2, but if it was this way, I'm glad I did. It's gonna get my first 1 @ rating, because Chris Taylor should do better than that. It's playable, but I'd rather grind my guns up to maximum level in Cave Story, and at least that keeps me occupied.

i picked it up on PC hardware forums.

It migrated there (and now it has migrated here...see how that works?)

Really it originated in 9-11 Truther forums (hint thats what the T was for) but since the Truth movement basically campaign-jacked RP it is now also associated with Paulians.

In an interesting side note it has also migrated to white supremacist forums! So by all means, keep using it if you don't mind being automatically associated with Paulians, Truthers, and the KKK.

What the hell are you takling about, the idea of repeating something for empahsis is not new, quoting a post on an internet forum is not exactly propeirtary technology.

Simply because someone you don't like uses a method of comunication it dosn't mean you don't have to, or that it somehow belongs to them. lol

Who cares who used it first, the Nazis ruined the swastika and I really hate people who do that! Seriosuly, lol, what is with stupid people on the internet? lmao.

i smell BS. i can't find any evidence of what you've said (the burden of which should fall to you anyhow), and therefore i'm invoking Russell's teapot. you might be right, but until you can prove it, i'm going to chose to believe that your assertions are reflective of your own forum-posting habits more than a history of "QFT" as a meme. should you provide sufficient evidence to make your case, i will gladly admit i was incorrect.

also, do people associate Nazis with Hinduism just because the swastika "migrated" from India? (edit: I see Aractain already made this point).

Anyway back on track I played the demo today. Pretty basic. I can see coming home and just shooting things for some quick fun. My system did not handle it to well. My PC usually handles this kind of graphics but it had to be turned down to get it to even be playable. Geforce 7800 GO, 2 gig Ram and 1.8 duel core. I would think I should at least get it to run smooth. I have seen it where the demos are not tweaked for performance so I am hoping that is what the issue was. I think I will see what the reviews say and possibly pick it up when it hits retail.

Has anyone else gotten a Crusader no regret vibe from teh game?

I doubt any game could match the awesomeness that Crusader was... Why isn't that a third person shooter like gears of war, damnit. I want my automatic shotgun back!

Pro tip: don't try and play cutting edge games on a laptop, and then class that as having played the game as it was intended.

I have another couputer I use when I need a heavier system. I saw it as it was intended, so don't worry. I'm merely giving it flak for its high system req's.

I downloaded the Crusader: No Regret demo, just for kicks, and I prefered it. And I didn't get very far. I need to read the readme before try two.

I did not have a single problem running the game at the highest graphic setting and the highest resolution.

E6600
8800 GTX
4 Gigs Ram

The gameplay did seem even more basic than Dungeon Siege. The game actually reminded more of the original Fallout than Crusader. The customization and weapon selection with bionic enhancements really reminded me of Syndicate. That's one of my all time favorite games. I can see the potential in this game.

I think the demo did not do it any justice since it completely left out any character customization or abilities. It really poorly explained the cybernetic upgrades and the humanity meter. Also the engineering abilities were completely missing.

I look forward to trying this game out.

I hope you mean in style. Because Fallout is many times better.

Well, I'll give it that much. It's probably not as bad in the full version, but I don't wanna risk it.

I enjoyed the demo, the ongoing choice of retaining your humaninity or trade it out for upgrades should prove interesting when its fully fleshed out in the complete game. For me though it wasnt much of a choice, as I will always trade my humanity for a chaingun .

@OP: Look mate, if you have yourself an onboard Intel 945G or some geforce 8600GS and below, and expect to run games, then PLEASE, go learn a thing or two and come back. Today's mid end graphics cards are 100x more powerful than your average onboard chip. You can't expect a 2008 game to run buttery smooth on your craptop.

The game gets easily 15-20 fps on my old athlon 3000+ geforce 7800gt which I bought for 700 euros total including screen 3 years ago, all settings high.

It still is inferior compared to Dungeon Siege or any other respectable RPG out there. I wasn't thrilled.

It's good, it's just not as good as I'm used to expect from GPG.
The idea of removing most RPG elements (CUSTOMIZATION plx!!) to my opinion smells rotten fish, it could've saved the game, the lack of gameplay depth is frustrating.
And I don't need that guy whining about the story every time I reach the main menu. GOD!

I give it a 7/10, but I won't buy it. If it had 20 hours of gameplay I would, but review sites report 10. (10?! Is this a Legends of Aranna in Space? (aka expansion))

PS: The UI is nice, I liked it, it's HUGE but it doesn't give away its size when you play. GOGO hellchick!!

I picked it up, and I had most of the same concerns as you did, but decided to take a leap of faith and throw in some support to GPG in light of Demigod and all.

I was actually pleasantly surprised. I mean, I didn't think it'd be bad, just not as fun as it turned out to be. It's true, I miss finding "gear", but you still have customization options and there's still a good bit of replayability. Even though you only loot scraps, you still can't upgrade everything, given how much there is to upgrade (armor, each gun, HR-V, plus making grenades/mines/medkits/etc). Gun choices aside (which you pick up at pre-determined places), there are at least 4 chances for replayability in the game (skill choices of cybernetics vs humanity, and a storyline choice I won't spoil). The skill system is also done in such a way that you obviously can't max out everything, and can lean either towards more direct combat abilities, or engineering to throw down sentries, create drones, etc.

It isn't as long as some other RPGs, definitely, but despite its more simple nature it's freakishly fun to play when the action gets going. I don't know about the 10 hours (mine seemed longer, but I'm always the explorer), but there's something to be said about fast paced action without needing to go back to town to sell stuff every few minutes. MP doesn't have a very large following yet, but I got in a game last night (4 players max) where you basically run through 15 missions on another colony ship - and supposedly those get tougher as you do them. You start with everything maxed (still have to get scraps for upgrades, and this character progress saves between sessions), and since it's 4 player (and has different difficulties, apparently), the action is obviously more fun. More bad guys, tougher bad guys, the works

Plus, GPG gets huge bonus points for easter eggs. "I found the frag rifle. I'm gonna use it to gouge evil from its shell!"
