Show some respect
Published on May 2, 2008 By erathoniel In Misc

Respect is a minimal standard of decency that is required to be given before it can be recieved. It requires that one rises above one's barbarian state, above the minimal legal and ethical standards. Respect can only be given if prerequisites are met.

  • No threatening
  • No duress
  • Civility
  • Nobility
  • Peacekeeping
  • Wisdom
  • Intimacy
  • Disclosure
  • Accountability
  • Freedom

Therefore, I find most of the people on JU unworthy of my respect.

Respect must be given before it can be earned.

Noted. I try to respect people at default, but most people here have lost my respect. You actually have it, by the way.

(Just thinking outloud here) Why is it that we're having such a surge of....odd people here?

Anywho, Ock's got it right, respect must be given before it can be earned. To be honest, there've been a few times where i've seen you not give any respect what-so-ever.

Gee thanks , part of it might be from an "Expelled" thread on the SoaSE forums. There was a massive thread that got locked for being too Off-Topic and they redirected posters here if they wanted to pick it back up.

I not so sure if he means to be or just doesn't realize how it comes off. I've known some people that never meant to be disrespectful, just didn't realize how they came off. Communication through typing also tends to make people a little too concise sometimes, at expense of their express humility.

Sorry, erathoniel, don't mean to talk past you. I just don't see a whole lot of respect in your threads, at best I would say they are neutral; and I can't say whether you gave some of the other posters respect by default as I've only been here a week or so. Keys to making others realize you do respect them are using the phrases "in my opinion" and "I believe" a lot, you seem to be getting better about this.

Respect is awknowledging an individual's competency.

Granted, that it is true. And good suggestions.

Haha, well, I haven't really seen much of you so I can't say much on how you are. I mean more along the lines of The Politico, or as I fondly (gag, sarcasm) call her, TP.

Wait, yours? Or do you mean mine?

Mine, Ock, hasn't posted in this thread that I know of (unless it was deleted); I noticed when skimming for where I left off in threads his and mine bear a resemblance to each others.

Eh, it's more about what others

Example: My gf wants to go out to dinner at one place. I want another, but, being respectful is taking into consideration for the last week we have gone wherever I wanted, so we go where she wants.
on May 02, 2008

Respect is accepting people for being actual people, and not treading over them or cheating them, or affronting them in an unnecessary or unhelpful manner.

I've tried to give respect first. If you come off too badly to me, then you may not have a shot.

You only did this because you see her as a competent equal... assuming there wasn't something else in it for you that was the chief reason.

Actually, that is a part of respect. You acknowledge someone.
