Listen to Erathoniel ranting on and on in good ol' conservative Christian fashion.

I struggled with pornography for a long time. It was something I hated, and something I wished it was near-impossible to find. But just how hard is it to find porn?

Not. Despite the fact that it should be behind an age-gate, many sources of porn run it behind no protection, or minimal. One site is incompatible with firefox, so porn can be accessed without any age-verification.

And age verification? "Are you 18?". That's all. There are a few sites I've visited with full age-gates, but about eighty percent of those I ever went to had no separate age gate or even a visible age-verification system in Firefox.

And how hard is it to accidentally access porn? In a week, I got 2 porn links disguised as normal links, and I got ads for material without soliciting them while browsing on otherwise clean sites.

Filters work about ninety percent of the time, but some pornography does not use names or keywords familiar to filter software, and adding in the lingo for every type of porn is nearly impossible. And filters can often be disabled or worked around, so they may not even be effective.

So, I ask you, do we need a reform in the internet porn? I believe very strongly that we do. It exists, it's practically marketed to minors, and it is addictive and shameful. It causes emotional and psychological damage, and is a pox upon the sight of humanity.

Porn is legal here, therefore there is a choice to look, or not to look. That is up to the individual. What we don't want is some do-gooder imposing their prudish views on everyone else.

Legal if not distributed to minors, which I can tell you through experience has happened.

So you CAN relate to at least one female without viewing them as an object?

Yes, but how can I?

I'm also curious...where was your mother when you were 8-12 and looking at porn?

I'm stealthy. I can move around on the computer in .5 sec's, so I don't have a problem hiding things there. Plus I'm relatively paranoid. Plus, 8 was when I was exposed, and from there to twelve I had no more than incidental exposure. It was hen I was 12 that I then became addicted.

I'm curious as to why some, like my family, were able to move on, and some, like yourself, got stuck.

Karen, this slide pretty much sums up the Neurotransmitters involved with addiction:

Yep.I would come home from school, and go on the internet, and become worthless. It would be the only thing I'd want to do. And if somebody wanted to keep me from it? It was not happy for me. I would become easily bored and detatched, and I wouldn't be paying attention because I'd be thinking about my favorite videos.

it would be interesting to explore the need for porn....we seem to have created it....putting strict constraints on our natural animal behaviour....

I wonder...if back in the caveman days......with the clan, all living in their non-partitioned cave....how they reacted to the next door neighbours 10 feet away having a nookie......would it have been ho-hum.....or entertainment....or perhaps it was meant to be a stimulus for natural animal instinct to kick in and increase procreation....

I don't care what consenting adults do...as long as it harms nobody....and doesn't involve animals....kids....

in fact...I'd rather see a teen watching a soft porn movie...than the incredible violence dished up to them nowadays...in movies and video games....

That chart is amazing, DrJBHL.

Erathaniel:  Congrats on beating (no pun intended), the porn habit.

SS is right. You have an addiction. You will most likely substitute one addiction for another until you see that you have an addictive personality. Most do. We are creatures of habit. It is keeping things in check that is hard.

Very true. It actually is the mechanism of reward (or pleasure) which enhances the "learning" of the behavior. Thus, it can be argued that it is learning and it's enforcing mechanisms without the consideration of boundaries which underlies addiction.

It is ironic that one of the mechanisms which allowed us to become the dominant species on earth when unrestrained can become so destructive of that end.

NT....absolutely correct. Freud called this "symptom substitution"...one must get at the root or the weed grows again.

How about a 12 step program to get us off this Post?

We could call it "Threadanon" .
